About FOCOS

An orthopaedic hospital with a charitable mission, in Pantang, Accra.

FOCOS began as the dream of its founder, Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei: to see the best orthopaedic care reach people in Ghana and sub-Saharan Africa who could not otherwise get it.

Our mission is to provide comprehensive, affordable orthopaedic care to those who would not otherwise have access to it, with a special focus on complex spine deformities and children’s orthopaedic problems.

FOCOS is funded by donations and sponsorship raised in the USA and Ghana. Close to $30 million from more than 15,000 donors has supported patients and built FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital in Accra.

The hospital

FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital opened in 2012 with 60 beds, and is accredited for in-patient and out-patient care. It has radiology, laboratory and physiotherapy departments, and offers orthopaedics and spine, neurology, family medicine, emergency care, eye care, vaccination, ambulance, pharmacy, diet therapy, endoscopy and EEG.

The hospital is working towards accreditation by Joint Commission International (JCI), the global mark of quality in hospital care.

Why patients choose FOCOS

FOCOS has been rated the No. 1 orthopaedic specialty hospital in Ghana since 2018. Our surgical infection rate is 1–3%, comparable to global averages; WHO studies put typical rates in low- and middle-income countries at 6–19%.

We are known for correcting complex spine deformities, using techniques such as halo-gravity traction and magnetic growing rods, and for joint replacement and trauma surgery. Patient safety is part of everyday care: every member of staff, medical or not, is trained to keep patients safe.

Thank you to our patients, volunteers, local medical partners, donors and sponsors, and everyone who has been part of the FOCOS story.
