Questions patients ask

Quick answers about visiting, paying, travelling from abroad and volunteering.

Visiting FOCOS

How do I book an appointment?
Book online through “Book Appointment”, or call 059 692 0909 and we will help you.
Can I see a specialist without a referral?
Some specialists can be seen without one. Others ask for a referral letter, which helps the doctor understand your condition.
What should I do on my first visit?
Tell the front desk at the OPD block that it is your first visit. If you have an appointment, you will be registered and asked to sign consent forms. You then receive a number, pay, and wait to be called. If you have no appointment, we will make one for you.
What should I bring?
A valid ID, earlier medical records, X-rays or scans, test results and the medicines you are taking.
How do I get tests done?
The laboratory and radiology run around the clock. Bring your doctor’s request to the front desk at the OPD block. After payment, staff will take you to the right department.
When can I visit a patient on the ward?
Every day from 10 to 11 am and from 4 to 6 pm. Children are not allowed to visit.

Billing & insurance

How can I pay?
Cash, mobile money, or debit and credit card. We also accept insurance from our partner insurers.
Is my insurance accepted?
We work with the insurers listed on this page. Cover can change, so call 059 692 0901 to confirm before your visit.
Can I get an estimate before treatment?
Yes. After a specialist has reviewed your case, we give you a detailed estimate of the cost.
How much do medical reports cost?
Fees for medical reports follow the professional fees and charges approved by the Ghana Medical Association.

International patients

How do I book an appointment from abroad?
Contact our International Patient Services team by phone, email or through this website. We will guide you through every step, from sharing your medical records to confirming your appointment.
Do you treat my condition?
We specialise in complex bone, joint and spine conditions: spine deformity, joint replacement, children’s orthopaedics, trauma and more. If you are not sure, send us your reports and our team will review your case and advise you.
How long does it take to get a treatment plan?
Once we receive your medical records, a specialist reviews them and we usually send an assessment and treatment plan within 3 to 5 working days. Any further tests are done soon after you arrive.
How long will I stay?
It depends on your treatment. Many patients finish their tests within a week; patients having surgery stay longer to recover. We give you a personal timeline before you travel.
Can I see all the specialists I need in one trip?
Usually, yes. We coordinate your care across departments so you can see everyone you need during your visit.
Is there a separate registration for foreign nationals?
No. Bring your passport or ID, any referral forms, insurance documents and pre-authorisations.
Do you help with travel and accommodation?
We do not book flights, but we help with airport pick-up and accommodation near the hospital, and recommend trusted travel partners.
Do I need a visa?
Most visitors need a visa for Ghana. Check the entry and visa requirements with the Ghana embassy or consulate in your country before you travel.
What is it like to stay in hospital?
Private and shared rooms are available. Our team makes sure you feel at home, with personal attention throughout your stay.
Will my doctor at home be kept informed?
Yes, with your permission. Our doctors can share reports and treatment plans with your doctor at home for a smooth handover.
Is an interpreter available?
Yes. Tell us your preferred language and we will arrange an interpreter in person, by phone or by video.
What should I bring?
A list of your medicines, recent medical reports, test results and scans (such as X-rays or MRI), your passport, insurance details if you have them, and your referring doctor’s contact details.

Volunteering

Who can volunteer?
Anyone aged 18 or over can apply, but priority goes to experienced medical professionals. If you are not a medical professional, include a short statement about your skills and how they would help FOCOS.
How far ahead should I apply?
As early as possible: mission trips fill up quickly. Places depend on the hospital’s needs and the surgical schedule. Apply at least three months before you plan to travel.
How are volunteers selected?
The FOCOS Medical Advisory Committee reviews applications about six weeks before each trip, based mainly on the hospital’s needs and the surgical schedule. We will let you know as soon as a decision is made, usually six weeks before your trip.
What documents and vaccines do I need?
You need a visa to enter Ghana; once you are accepted, our staff will help you apply. It usually takes at least a week. You also need a yellow fever vaccination, from your own doctor.
Do I pay to volunteer?
There is no application or volunteer fee, but volunteers pay for their own flights. Our staff can help you raise sponsorship from businesses, friends or family.
How long is the flight to Ghana?
A direct flight from New York to Accra takes about 10 hours.
Will I have time to see the country?
Usually, yes, depending on how long you stay. Popular trips include Cape Coast, the national parks and the monkey sanctuary. Transport is arranged by FOCOS; you pay your own admission fees, usually between $10 and $50.
How much money should I bring?
We suggest $300 to $500 for a two-week stay. Larger notes ($50 and $100) get a better exchange rate, and our staff will take you to change money.
